Teeth whitening is one of the most requested cosmetic treatments we see at FORME Dental — and one of the most misunderstood. Between drugstore strips, influencer-endorsed kits, and professional in-office treatments, it can be hard to know what actually works and what's worth your money. Here's a straightforward breakdown.
Professional vs. Over-the-Counter
The fundamental difference is the concentration of the whitening agent — usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Over-the-counter products are capped at relatively low concentrations by regulation, which limits how much of a change they can produce. Professional treatments use higher-concentration agents, applied by or under the supervision of a dentist, which produces faster and more dramatic results.
For someone with significant staining — from coffee, tea, red wine, or years of general wear — a professional treatment will often do in one session what over-the-counter products can't achieve in months.
In-Office vs. Take-Home (Professional)
In-office whitening is done at the dental office in one to two hours. The dentist applies a high-concentration gel to your teeth and, in some systems, uses a light to accelerate the process. You leave with noticeably whiter teeth the same day. This is the best option if you have an event coming up or want fast results.
Professional take-home trays use a lower concentration than in-office treatment but are still significantly stronger than anything available over the counter. Custom trays are made from impressions of your teeth, so the gel contacts every tooth surface evenly. You wear them for 30 to 60 minutes daily over one to two weeks. Results are excellent and often longer-lasting than in-office treatment because of the gradual, even application.
Many patients do both: an in-office session for immediate impact, then take-home trays to maintain and deepen the result over time.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Whitening works best on natural tooth structure stained by food, drink, tobacco, or age. It does not change the color of crowns, veneers, or bonding. If you have significant dental work visible in your smile, we'll discuss how to approach whitening so that your natural teeth and your restorations still match well after treatment.
Patients with sensitive teeth should discuss this before whitening. We have strategies to minimize sensitivity — including desensitizing agents and modified treatment schedules — so sensitivity doesn't have to be a barrier.
Results and Longevity
Most patients see a 4 to 8 shade improvement after professional whitening. Results typically last one to three years depending on your diet and oral hygiene habits. Periodic touch-ups — usually with take-home trays — keep things looking fresh without repeating the full treatment.
