Fluoride is one of the most effective tools in preventive dentistry — and one of the most misunderstood. At FORME Dental, we believe informed patients make better decisions, so here's a clear-eyed look at what fluoride actually does and why we recommend it.
What Is Fluoride?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in soil, water, and many foods. In dentistry, it's used to strengthen tooth enamel — the hard outer layer of your teeth — and to reverse early signs of tooth decay.
How Does It Work?
Every day, your enamel loses minerals through a process called demineralization, caused by acids from plaque bacteria and sugar. Fluoride helps remineralize enamel by incorporating itself into the tooth structure, making it more resistant to future acid attacks. It can even halt early-stage cavities before they become full lesions.
Professional Fluoride Treatments
During your routine visits at FORME, we may apply a concentrated fluoride varnish to your teeth. This takes only a minute and provides a significantly higher level of protection than fluoride toothpaste alone. We especially recommend it for patients with a history of cavities, dry mouth, gum recession, or orthodontic appliances.
A Note on Safety
At the concentrations used in dentistry and public water fluoridation, fluoride has an excellent safety record backed by decades of research. The American Dental Association, the World Health Organization, and the CDC all recognize community water fluoridation as one of the ten great public health achievements of the 20th century.
If you have questions about fluoride treatments at your next visit, we're always happy to talk through the options that make sense for your specific needs.
